The start via the B124 between Arbesbach and Rappottenstein is enough to make bikers’ hearts beat faster – a dream route with combinations of bends that you rarely find. But that’s just the beginning.

You reach Ottenschlag via hidden valleys before approaching the centrepiece of the tour: the Wachau region.

Vineyards, panoramic views & the magic of the Danube

Winding roads take you down to Mühldorf, up to Himberg and finally into the middle of the vineyards above Weißenkirchen. Be sure to stop at the viewpoint – the view over the Danube and the Wachau is breathtaking!

From here, the road winds its way down to Dürnstein, then continues along the banks of the Danube to Krems. You can park at the Stone Gate, just a few steps away from the charming old town.

Delightful Danube valley & winding Jauerling

Cross the Danube bridge at Stein to reach Mautern and enjoy the picturesque Danube valley. A detour to Maria Langegg and onwards via Aggsbach to Melk takes you directly to the imposing Melk Abbey – a cultural highlight of the route.

This cross-border tour is characterised by fascinating contrasts – both scenic and cultural. From the lovely, well-kept Mühlviertel, the route leads into the neighbouring Czech Republic – into regions where time seems to have stood still in places. Between historic towns, rustic river valleys and tourist hotspots such as the Vltava reservoir, you immerse yourself in the diversity of the Bohemian Forest.

From the Mühlviertel to the Czech Republic – the tour begins

Via small side roads and a short stretch of main road, you head towards the Wullowitz border crossing (be careful: don’t forget your ID – occasional checks in the Czech Republic!) Shortly afterwards you reach the Vltava – romantically embedded in rolling hills, lined with rubber dinghies, kayaks and campsites.

Rosenberg Castle & UNESCO town of Krumlov

The first highlight is the small town of Rožmberk nad Vltavou with its imposing Rožmberk Castle, which towers high above the bend in the river. The route continues on typical Bohemian roads towards Český Krumlov – a jewel of medieval town architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The second largest castle complex in Central Europe towers over the old town, which nestles picturesquely on the Vltava River. A tour is definitely worthwhile!

Vltava reservoir & return to a paradise of bends

The next stage point is Frymburk (Freiburg) on the Vltava reservoir – the largest reservoir in the Czech Republic, also known as the Lipno reservoir. Via Lipno and the imposing dam wall, the route continues to Přední Výtoň and finally to the Guglwald border crossing – back to the Mühlviertel.

Here you immediately notice: better roads, more grip and lush green hills. The route leads via Afiesl and Helfenberg to Waxenberg – with ever-changing panoramic views and marvellous combinations of bends.

Pleasure tip & grand finale

The Eidenberger Alm is a worthwhile stopover – with a sunny terrace and spectacular views over the Mühlviertel. Here you can recharge your batteries, because the last 70 kilometres are really tough: from Gutau onwards, a final ride begins – one bend follows the next until you hopefully arrive back in Liebenau without any dizziness.

The Mühlviertel inspires with its unique combination of rolling hills, enchanted valleys, countless bends and the majestic Danube. Our personal highlight are the varied ups and downs in the Danube valley and the breathtaking views of the Schlögener Donauschlinge.

Your tour starts with winding sections through the hilly Mühlviertel, uphill and downhill to Haslach. Continue along the Große Mühl river to the mystical Teufelsmühle mill. You follow the Kleine Mühl via Hühnergeschrei to Obermühl an der Donau.

Danube valley highlights & panoramic views

The route then heads back into the Danube valley via Marsbach to the Danube bridge at Niederranna. After the crossing, you cycle directly along the Danube and get the opportunity to enjoy the view of the castles on the river.

A stop at the Schlögener Schlinge is of course a must before you head back to the high plateau and down towards the historic boat town of Aschach.

Pleasure & history

Back over the Danube bridge into the Mühlviertel, the route leads to the Schlager Wirt inn – here you can enjoy homemade specialities, including delicious cheese, perfect for a well-earned break.

Finale through Freistadt to Liebenau

This tour takes you on the trail of history through the charming northern Waldviertel – past castles, palaces, ruins and historic old towns that are well worth seeing. The perfect route for anyone looking for a very special charm.

A variety of bends and gentle hills

The mixture of numerous, crisp bends and long sweeps through the idyllic vineyards makes this tour a real riding pleasure.

Start & first highlights

The tour starts by crossing the Kamp into the Waldviertel region, where you are immediately greeted by some fantastic bends. Past Rosenau Castle and through the charming town of Zwettl, the route continues to the Kamp reservoirs. At the Ottenstein reservoir, the terrace at the boat landing stage invites you to enjoy a cosy espresso stop – or perhaps a double stop.

The route continues along the Dobra reservoir to Krumau am Kamp – an area that impresses with its countless castles, palaces and ruins. Now the varied ups and downs of the Kamptal begin, with small hairpin bends and perfect combinations of bends. The Renaissance Rosenberg Castle towers majestically high above the valley and always in view.

Weinviertel region & historic towns

At Gars you leave the Kamptal, which also marks the border with the Weinviertel. Long, gentle hills with extensive vineyards open up here. The roads become wider, the bends longer. Historic towns and small, charming wine villages line the route.

A special stop-off point is the town of Retz, which once grew rich through the wine trade. The highlight here: the extensive, underground wine cellar labyrinth with over 20 kilometres of labyrinthine corridors – a real experience!

Thayatal & winding conclusion

The route continues to Hardegg in the picturesque Thaya Valley – here you can really enjoy the bends once again. The Thaya accompanies you again and again through the varied landscape.

Shortly before Raabs, you reach the idyllic Hotel Liebnitzmühle with its cosy courtyard garden – perfect for a break. The route now becomes more winding, the roads smaller and takes you via Heidenreichstein to the Czech border. Via Gmünd you finally reach historic Weitra, where a coffee stop on the main square at the Brauhotel with a view of the castle invites you to linger.
