Excursion destinations in the Mühlviertel

In addition to fantastic motorbike routes, the region also boasts cultural highlights and excursion destinations. Whether you enjoy strolling through charming villages, tasting regional specialities or exploring places steeped in history, variety awaits you around the Hotel Rockenschaub.

A pleasure trip through the Mühlviertel region

Welcome to the heart of Austria’s beer region! The Mühlviertel – nestled in the border triangle of the Mühlviertel, Lower Bavaria and Southern Bohemia – is not only a unique landscape, but also a stronghold for true beer connoisseurs. Beer has been brewed here for over 500 years – using the best ingredients directly from the region. The soft primary rock water and the finest hops from Austria’s largest hop-growing region give Mühlviertel beer its unmistakable character. No wonder that master brewers from all over the world come here to experience the “liquid gold”.

Immerse yourself in the world of beer: visit hop farmers, traditional show breweries and authentic inns that are dedicated to the enjoyment of beer. Hike or cycle through the gently rolling hop fields – always accompanied by the aroma of fresh beer and the Mühlviertel feeling of home.

As our guest at Hotel Rockenschaub, you will receive an exclusive beer map with our personal recommendations: from insider tips to culinary highlights centred around beer. And of course you can also taste a fine selection of Mühlviertel beer specialities directly at our hotel – regional, brewed with love and full of character.

A healing break

Immerse yourself, breathe deeply, breathe easy: Forest bathing in the Mühlviertel region is much more than just a walk—it is a conscious encounter with nature that noticeably strengthens the body, mind, and soul.

The fact that spending time in the forest is proven to be good for you has now been scientifically proven: in a field study by holistic physician Dr. “Wood” Martin Spinka, it was found that spending time in the forest on a regular basis significantly improves physical and mental well-being. Just four hours a week is enough to noticeably promote the body’s ability to recover.

What makes forest air bathing in the Mühlviertel region so special is that it combines old regional traditions with modern insights from medicine and mindfulness practice. The clear, pure forest air, the gentle hills, the play of light and shadow—all this creates an environment in which stress melts away, the immune system is strengthened, and new energy flows.

In the countryside, but centrally located

Liebenau may be idyllically situated in the countryside, but there is no shortage of cultural programmes. Take a day and visit one of the nearby towns in the region, such as the town of the “brewing communists” Freistadt, the beautiful historic village of Wachau or the brewing town of Weitra.

On the trail of history

The Mühlviertel is not only known for its beer, but also for its many historical residences – castles, palaces, abbeys, even back then spiritual and secular rulers recognised how beautiful it is around the Hotel Rockenschaub. We recommend you pay a visit to Freistadt Castle and the castle museum to not only see the impressive façade with your own eyes, but also to learn a lot about the history of the Mühlviertel.

Learned something new again

We understand that visitors to a museum often want to do more than just look at and read panels. That’s why we recommend a visit to one of the great interactive museums that you can easily reach from Hotel Rockenschaub. For example, there is the Textile Museum, the Mechanical Sound Factory or the Merchants’ Museum in Haslach an der Mühl or – a personal favourite – the Zündapp Private Museum in Linden for all motorbike lovers.

Made by hand: tradition in the Mühlviertel

In the Mühlviertel, many crafts have a long tradition of which the locals are very proud. We recommend that interested guests take the time to visit one of the various show workshops and experience traditional crafts at first hand:

‘Vabogn & Vadraht’ wildwood furniture, Mörzinger paper manufactory

‘Kunst zwingt Rost’ sculpture park, Amethystwelt Maissau, glass art in the Waldviertel region

Punkenhofer sheep’s wool manufactory in Weitersfelden

Waldviertel shoe workshop GEA in Schrems

Watershed – sculpture park in Windhaag

Sport & nature around the adults-only Hotel Rockenschaub

Hiking and archery are skilfully combined on this excursion. The Stoneface Archery course is located just 7 kilometres from Hotel Rockenschaub and offers archery fun for young and old with its 32 3D animal dummies on the 4-kilometre circular trail.

The Mühlviertler Alm region boasts an extensive network of cycle paths that stretches across ten municipalities – and Liebenau is right in the middle of it all. The gentle hills and idyllic landscapes around Liebenau are perfect for exploring in a relaxed manner on an e-bike – picnic breaks included, of course.
From mid-April to the end of October, four modern e-bikes (including two e-mountain bikes) are available to our guests at Hotel Rockenschaub for hire free of charge, with helmets provided free of charge.

Just 50 kilometres from Liebenau, in Bad Leonfelden, very special bikes are being created: almost silent electric motorbikes that are completely emission-free. If you fancy a new riding experience, you can see for yourself on a guided tour.

Safe, fast and really entertaining: adventurous people from 2 to 99 get their money’s worth with summer tobogganing! Your toboggan is comfortably pulled up the slope by a drag lift for around 400 metres – once at the top, the bars automatically release and off you go: You can easily control your own speed on the 600 metre long track – with the brake lever, depending on your preferences.

Why not test your own limits and experience a real sense of achievement? In the high ropes course between the treetops, an adventure in the midst of nature awaits – full of excitement, movement and moments of happiness. Feel the challenge, enjoy the freedom and rediscover your vitality.

By the way: nearby, the Kaolinum Mining Museum invites you on an exciting journey into the history of kaolin mining – perfect for a varied day out!

A rope park in the centre of the old town? That’s what makes the Höhenflug adventure park so special – it’s the first of its kind in the whole of Europe! Between old walls and historic alleyways, 20 exciting high and low rope elements await you. The highlight: the steepest Flying Fox in Austria with an average gradient of 19° – adrenalin and views included. You’ve never experienced Freistadt like this before.

Whether young or old, leisurely or ambitious athlete: everyone can get going at the Xundwärts motor skills park! The open-air fitness trail is the ideal destination for anyone who wants to combine exercise, nature and a bit of a challenge.

On around 1,000 m² in the middle of the forest, 33 varied stations invite you to train your coordination, agility and fitness in a playful way – and have lots of fun at the same time.

Fresh air, exercise and a pinch of sporting ambition: disc golf brings it all together! The game is played with special discs – known as golf discs, which are thrown at target baskets along a set course.

The rules? Quite simple: whoever gets through all the stations with the fewest throws wins. Ideal for families, friends or anyone who wants to try something new – outdoors in nature and with lots of fun!

A carriage ride for two through the gentle hilly landscape of the Mühlviertel is guaranteed to provide pure relaxation. Whether in a summer carriage or on a winter horse-drawn sleigh: The cosy (and sometimes a little more energetic) rocking along invites you to cheer, laugh – and of course to cuddle up together.

Just 200 metres from the hotel is the public tennis court with two perfectly prepared clay courts – ideal for a comparison of skills between friends or a quick game in between. Up to eight players can serve at the same time.
The courts can be booked by the hour. Rackets and used balls can be hired free of charge from the tennis parlour. Tip: As the selection is limited, it’s worth bringing your own equipment. This way, nothing stands in the way of having fun!

The fairways and greens nestle harmoniously into the natural landscape between rolling hills, old groups of trees, fields and pastures – an 18-hole course that will delight beginners and experienced players alike.

Picturesque ponds, impressive granite rocks and the marvellous view of the charming village and the Mühlviertel hills provide the perfect backdrop. Only around 20 kilometres from the hotel, a golfing experience in a class of its own awaits you here.
