Hikes in the Mühlviertel
Hiking 1,000 metres above everyday life
In Liebenau, the highest municipality in the Mühlviertel at just under 1,000 metres above sea level, you can expect top-marked, easy-to-master hiking trails – without any steep climbs, after all, you are already “at the top”. Nine marked circular hiking trails start right at the hotel door and lead through the gentle hilly landscape. They vary in length from around 4 to 20 kilometres and are ideal for leisure hikers and nature lovers.
Travelling along the Johannesweg
In tune with the pulse of the times and the growing desire for deceleration and inner contemplation, the 84 kilometre long Johannesweg was created on the Mühlviertler Alm – a pilgrimage path for body, mind and soul.
As our guest, you enjoy special comfort: we take you to the start of each stage every day and pick you up again after the day’s stage – completely relaxed and flexible.
Hikers and pilgrims are delighted by the varied landscape, the warmth of the Mühlviertel people and the powerful places along the way. If you ask our guests, they always rave about the Ruttenstein ruins, Prandegg, the Zwischenstromland or the marvellous panorama on the Kammererberg.
The Tannermoor nature reserve
A real natural jewel: the Tannermoor is one of the last unspoilt raised bogs in Europe. Two leisurely circular trails (5 and 8 km) start at the Rubener pond and lead through a tranquil, fascinating moorland landscape. Rare plants, clear air and marvellous views – especially from the granite rocks of the Lehrmüller Mauern – make this hike an unforgettable nature experience.
The Kamp spring
In the northernmost corner of Liebenau, where the Mühlviertel slowly merges into the Waldviertel, the Große Kamp river originates from the ground. What begins as a gentle spring soon develops into an impressive river, which later forms the Kamptal valley, famous for its excellent wine, before flowing into the Danube.
A varied circular route of around 8 kilometres leads directly from the hotel to the source of the Kamp – with a short detour into neighbouring Lower Austria. The route runs through idyllic countryside and is very popular not only with hikers, but also with joggers and Nordic walkers. A beautiful excursion with gentle inclines and quiet forest edge paths.
Up the Brockenberg
At the highest point of Liebenau, at 1,058 metres, a very special vantage point awaits you: the viewing point on the Brockenberg. From here, you can look out over idyllic Liebenau – and on a clear day, enjoy a panorama that stretches from the Waldviertel in the east to the Czech Republic in the north and across the Alpine foothills to the Traunstein and Tennengebirge mountains in the south.
A particularly atmospheric place for a rest is the “Ötscherblick” below the summit: a wooden platform between mighty granite rocks – ideal for a short break or a picnic in nature.
The 4-kilometre circular trail to the viewing platform is easy to walk and starts right in the village. You can climb the tower by inserting a coin for €1 – a small amount for a great panorama.
The north-south long-distance hiking trail
One stage of the European long-distance hiking trail E05 (or E605) from the North Sea to the Adriatic leads directly through Liebenau. Coming from Nebelstein via Karlstift, many long-distance hikers particularly appreciate the stopover at Hotel Rockenschaub.
Here you can recharge your batteries: relax in the cosy wellness area, enjoy a soothing massage if required and store wet clothes in the drying room. A delicious dinner awaits you in the evening, followed by a hearty breakfast in the morning and a restful night in comfortable rooms. The next day, well rested and refreshed, you can set off in the direction of Arbesbach or Schönbach.
The Johannesweg is a spiritual hiking trail that winds its way through the gently undulating landscape of the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel. It can be completed in three stages – but we recommend taking four days to enjoy the 84 kilometres at your leisure.
For example: Kammererberg – Königswiesen, Königswiesen – Pierbach, Pierbach – St. Leonhard, St. Leonhard – Kammererberg.
The Johannesweg is the brainchild of the Linz dermatologist Dr Johannes Neuhofer. At twelve selected stations, he wants to give hikers inspiration – to pause, gain new perspectives and listen to themselves more consciously.
What makes the Johannesweg so special is the mindset on which the entire concept is based: modern medical knowledge combined with a holistic philosophy of life. The aim is to draw new energy – for a healthy, happy life into old age.
Services for hikers
Our tip: Combine your hike with a stay at Hotel Rockenschaub. Hikers who combine the Johannesweg with a stay with us have the opportunity to obtain hiking maps and the stamp pass directly at the hotel reception. The Johannesweg app offers you various services to find water points, places to stop for refreshments and taxis along the way.
Rockenschaub’s Johannesweg Taxi
We take you flexibly to the start of your stage. We pick you up at the end of each day’s stage and take you back to the starting point the next morning. The total number of kilometres depends entirely on your choice of route – however, experience has shown that you will certainly not need a transfer of more than 320 km. The transport service is provided by our own 8-seater e-bus and is charged at € 0.80 per kilometre – the costs are shared fairly between all participants.
